CHILDHOOD, MODELING AND FIRST CONTACT WITH ENTERTAINMENT
Maaya Asou was born on November 4, 2003, in Kanagawa Prefecture. Her professional experience began unusually early. In a 2019 interview about her first stage, she remembered appearing on a Ciao runway when she was in the second grade of elementary school. She had already done modeling before joining Amuse, but Ciao Girl Collection 2011 became a decisive point in her personal history: it was her first Amuse job and the place where she encountered Sakura Gakuin.
This origin is sometimes compressed into the label “Ciao Girl,” but the distinction matters. Maaya unquestionably worked in the Ciao magazine, runway and commercial environment; however, reliable available records do not establish that she won the Ciao Girl Audition Grand Prix. It is safer to describe her as a child model associated with Ciao than to assign her an undocumented competition title.
After seeing Sakura Gakuin through that environment, Maaya became a genuine follower of the group. She attended performances and events before becoming a member herself. Her later transfer therefore was not simply an agency placement: it brought a young fan into the institution she had watched from the outside. That prior attachment helps explain the emotional seriousness with which she treated Sakura Gakuin’s traditions and her eventual responsibility for teaching younger members.
Maaya joined Amuse at around the same period, approximately 2011. Her 2022 farewell message said that she had spent ten years with the company, beginning in her second year of elementary school. During the first part of that decade she built a compact but varied child-entertainment résumé.
Her modeling work included children’s fashion catalogs for BOO FOO WOO and GRAGRA, magazine work for Shogakukan’s Ciao and still photography for ABC-MART. She appeared in television commercials or campaigns for Shimachu/HOME’S in 2012, House Foods’ Kokumaro Curry in 2014 and Ciao in 2014 and 2015. On January 3, 2013, she appeared in the NHK educational special “Uwasa-kun to Kagaku-chan.”
Her principal film credit from this period is Busjack. The film was produced in 2013 and released theatrically on February 8, 2014. Maaya played Sachi Kijima. It remains an important credit because it shows that her pre-Sakura activity was not limited to modeling and advertising, although her later public ambitions centered much more clearly on music than on acting.
2015: TRANSFER INTO SAKURA GAKUIN
Maaya transferred into Sakura Gakuin on May 6, 2015, at the 2015 Transfer Ceremony held at Ebisu The Garden Hall. She was eleven years old and in the sixth grade of elementary school. The large six-member transfer class also included Mirena Kurosawa, Momoko Okazaki, Marin Hidaka, Kano Fujihira and Soyoka Yoshida.
The scale of this class was significant. Sakura Gakuin’s annual system required its oldest members to graduate after junior-high school, so each new school year had to redistribute experience and personality. Maaya entered alongside several members who would remain central to the next four years of the group. Four of them — Maaya, Momoko, Kano and Soyoka — began in the same elementary-school grade, while Mirena and Marin entered at different school levels. These relationships would later shape both Maaya’s informal KYG identity and her senior responsibilities.
The 2015 Student Council was led by President Rinon Isono, Education Chairperson Saki Ooga and Talk Chairperson Saki Shirai. Maaya held no council office in her first year. Instead, her immediate task was to learn Sakura Gakuin’s performance vocabulary, school-theme conventions, diary culture and live etiquette.
On August 2, 2015, during Tokyo Idol Festival, Maaya joined the revived Go Home Club, sleepiece. Its lineup consisted of Saki Ooga, Mirena Kurosawa and Maaya. The unit’s stage identity was deliberately comic and domestic: pajamas, pillows, sleep-themed gestures and cover songs associated with childhood or lack of sleep. Maaya entered the unit with “Medaka no Kyoudai,” which later carried particular emotional meaning because it marked the beginning of her club activity.
The same year also established KYG, the informal trio of Kano Fujihira, Momoko Okazaki and Maaya. The initials were associated with the three members’ explosive energy and constant liveliness. Unlike Sakura Gakuin’s official clubs, KYG did not have a formal membership announcement, dedicated recording contract or separate discography. Its importance was social and narrative. It gave three young members a shared comic identity, and it became one of the friendships through which Maaya’s more uninhibited side was visible.
Maaya participated in the year’s main releases and performances, culminating in the album “Sakura Gakuin 2015 Nendo ~Kirameki no Kakera~” (Japanese title: “キラメキの雫”), released on March 3, 2016. Her first year placed her inside the group she had admired and gave her two complementary spaces: the official sleepiece unit and the unofficial KYG friendship.
2016: A MORE EXPERIENCED MEMBER AND THE SECOND SLEEPIECE LINEUP
The 2016 school year began after the graduation of Rinon Isono, Saki Ooga and Saki Shirai. Sara Kurashima became Student Council President, Aiko Yamaide became Vice President and Mirena Kurosawa became MC Chairperson. New members Tsugumi Aritomo, Yuzumi Shintani and Momoe Mori transferred in.
Maaya was now a first-year junior-high-school student. Although she still held no Student Council position, she was no longer a new transfer. At the 2016 orientation event she won the group’s arm-wrestling contest, a small but memorable example of the playful physical challenges used to reveal members’ personalities outside standard concerts.
sleepiece continued with a revised lineup: Mirena Kurosawa, Maaya and Kano Fujihira. Saki Ooga’s graduation had opened a place for Kano, bringing two members of KYG into the same official club. This version performed the group’s inherited repertoire, including “Hashire Shoujiki Mono.” At Sakura Gakuin Festival 2016 and again at the March 2017 graduation performance, the trio appeared in sleepiece’s characteristic pajamas.
The distinction between performance and recording is important. sleepiece’s catalog had been created by earlier generations, and the songs Maaya performed with the unit were not newly recorded as Maaya-led studio singles. Her sleepiece legacy is principally a live-performance legacy.
During this period Maaya and Momoko also served as supporters for the “12-sai.” franchise, another link to the Ciao-centered world in which Maaya’s career had begun. She participated with Sakura Gakuin in the “Shuoh Gakuen Gasshoubu” choral project in 2016 as part of the group ensemble; available official credits do not justify assigning her a separate named character.
The school year’s album, “Sakura Gakuin 2016 Nendo ~Yakusoku~,” was released on March 3, 2017. At the public class “Uta no Koukogaku” that month, Maaya selected Kashiwabara Yoshie’s “Haru na no ni.” The class required members to research a song released before they were born, explain its background and meaning, and then sing it a cappella. The format highlighted Maaya’s growing interest in singing apart from choreography and group spectacle.
When Mirena graduated on March 26, 2017, the second Maaya-era sleepiece lineup ended. The club then became inactive rather than being immediately passed to a third regular trio. Maaya’s connection to it nevertheless remained strong enough to be revived at her own graduation two years later.
2017: SECOND EDUCATION CHAIRPERSON
At the May 7, 2017, Transfer Ceremony, Aiko Yamaide became Student Council President. Megumi Okada became Talk Chairperson, Momoko Okazaki became Ganbare Chairperson and Maaya became Education Chairperson. Miku Tanaka and Miki Yagi joined as the year’s transfer students.
Maaya was Sakura Gakuin’s second Education Chairperson. The office had first been created for Saki Ooga in the 2015 school year, so descriptions calling Maaya the first holder are incorrect. The role suited a member whose own entry had been shaped by admiration for Sakura Gakuin and whose strongest growth had come from learning the group’s methods.
The Education Chairperson was not a conventional classroom teacher. Within Sakura Gakuin’s theatrical school system, the post represented responsibility for passing down accumulated knowledge: concert discipline, choreography details, member behavior, rehearsal habits and the traditions that could disappear when senior members graduated. Maaya later became known for giving younger members advice about singing. Her office formalized the transition from enthusiastic younger member to someone expected to make the entire group better.
At the transfer ceremony she performed a specially arranged individual presentation called “Maaya Special.” The title is occasionally mistaken for a commercial song, but it was a live feature or special segment, not a separately released single. It showed that her singing and stage identity were strong enough to support an individually focused moment within a group event.
On October 9, 2017, Sakura Gakuin’s “Autumn Shuffle Night” temporarily reassigned members to earlier clubs and related performance concepts. Maaya appeared in a one-night Pastel Wind lineup with Aiko Yamaide, Tsugumi Aritomo and Momoe Mori for “Scoreboard ni Love ga Aru.” She also joined Marin Hidaka and Kano Fujihira in a one-night BABYMETAL tribute lineup for “Gimme Chocolate!!” These were event-specific shuffle performances, not permanent memberships in Pastel Wind or BABYMETAL. Their value in Maaya’s biography lies in the range they displayed: school-club pop in one configuration and a demanding metal-idol cover in another.
The 2017 school year also changed the emotional landscape of KYG. Momoko Okazaki completed her Sakura Gakuin term and graduated in March 2018, leaving Maaya and Kano without the trio’s full everyday presence. KYG did not issue a formal dissolution announcement because it was never an official club, but the physical separation became meaningful to both remaining members. In later public-class reflections, the trio represented a period when their friendship and confidence had seemed permanent.
sleepiece did not operate as an active club during this school year. Maaya’s official identity instead centered on her education post, her core Sakura Gakuin performances and the increasingly recognizable strength of her voice. She appeared on “Sakura Gakuin 2017 Nendo ~My Road~,” released on March 3, 2018.
2018: FIFTH TALK CHAIRPERSON AND FINAL SCHOOL YEAR
Maaya entered her final Sakura Gakuin year in May 2018. The Student Council for that school year was deliberately distributed across five senior members and several specialized responsibilities:

Kano Fujihira — Performance Chairperson
Soyoka Yoshida — Education Chairperson
Sana Shiratori, Kokona Nonaka and Yume Nozaki joined as transfer students.
Maaya’s position is frequently misreported. She was not the president in 2018; Yuzumi held that office. Nor did Maaya remain Education Chairperson. Soyoka succeeded her in education, while Maaya became the fifth Talk Chairperson. The sequence itself demonstrated Sakura Gakuin’s philosophy: Maaya passed one function to a younger member and accepted a new challenge in her own final year.
As Talk Chairperson, Maaya was expected to improve how members expressed themselves in MC segments and talk-based programming. That included encouraging quieter members to enter conversations, strengthening reactions, recognizing when a discussion needed movement and helping the group show personality between songs. The role did not give her the president’s overall authority. Its value was more practical: a technically strong concert could still feel distant if twelve individual characters could not communicate with the audience.
The year gave Maaya visible opportunities to carry spoken programming herself. She hosted solo editions of the weekly FRESH! Monday program in August 2018 and March 2019. The “bocchi,” or alone, framing made the challenge explicit. These broadcasts served as direct tests of the Talk Chairperson’s ability to organize time, sustain interest and convert nervousness into entertainment without other members beside her.
At the same time, singing remained her central ambition. Her final album, “Sakura Gakuin 2018 Nendo ~Life Iroasenai Hibi~,” was released on March 3, 2019. The senior song “clover” was performed by Yuzumi Shintani, Maaya and Marin Hidaka. It is not a Maaya solo, but it is her most distinctive named studio track outside the annual full-group repertoire because it belongs specifically to her graduating class.
On the album and at final concerts, Maaya also contributed to the 2018 versions of Sakura Gakuin standards and new school-year songs. Her voice had become one of the year’s anchors. Contemporary graduation coverage described her next goal simply and clearly: she wanted to become a singer.
On March 3, 2019, Maaya attended her final “Uta no Koukogaku” public class and selected Miki Imai’s “PIECE OF MY WISH.” She explained that Sakura Gakuin’s 2015 song “Kirameki no Kakera” had been an encouragement to her, so she searched for older songs through words such as “kirameki” and “kakera,” eventually translating the idea of a fragment into the English word “piece.” She described the people who had supported her as pieces of hope and said that she wanted to become that kind of piece for others. Her a-cappella performance turned her final public class into a direct statement of gratitude and musical intent.
KYG was also part of that session, but through Kano’s presentation rather than Maaya’s song choice. Maaya and Kano opened their section by celebrating Momoko’s birthday. Kano then chose Dreams Come True’s “Egao no Yukue” and spoke about the KYG bond, Momoko’s absence and the way Maaya had encouraged her to speak up and act in her capacity as Performance Chairperson. The distinction preserves two connected but separate testimonies: Maaya’s “PIECE OF MY WISH” and Kano’s reflection on Maaya through “Egao no Yukue.”
That same day she appeared on bayfm78’s “Ashita no Ongaku,” where she participated in a musical session. The appearance was modest in scale, but it reinforced the direction she was presenting at graduation: not simply remaining a television personality, but developing as a vocalist and musician.
GRADUATION FROM SAKURA GAKUIN
Maaya graduated on March 30, 2019, at “The Road to Graduation 2018 Final ~Sakura Gakuin 2018 Nendo Sotsugyou~,” held at Kanagawa Kenmin Hall. The graduating class consisted of Maaya, Yuzumi Shintani and Marin Hidaka, and contemporary reporting placed attendance at approximately 2,200 people.
Her graduation performance brought together the main strands of her Sakura Gakuin history. She performed with the full group, sang “clover” with her two fellow seniors and participated in a special sleepiece revival. The revived lineup was Maaya, Marin and Kano. Its graduation medley included “Medaka no Kyoudai,” allowing Maaya to close her club history with the song connected to her first sleepiece appearance in 2015.
That final sleepiece performance should not be confused with a new studio incarnation. It was a special live revival, preserved on the 2018 graduation video, rather than the launch of an ongoing post-graduation unit. The official video track list identifies it as the “2018 Nendo Sotsugyoushiki Special Medley / Go Home Club sleepiece.”
In press coverage of the ceremony, Maaya said she had cried, laughed, felt happiness and frustration, and that being a Sakura Gakuin student had been the best. She left after 1,425 inclusive calendar days of membership, from May 6, 2015 through March 30, 2019.
Her final Sakura Gakuin diary entry appeared on April 11, 2019. It closed a substantial body of 82 diary posts. These entries are important primary records of how she explained her work, friendships, food obsessions, lessons and goals in her own public voice.
2019–2022: TRAINING OUT OF PUBLIC VIEW
After graduation, Maaya remained represented by Amuse and pursued the goal of becoming a music artist. Unlike some graduates who moved immediately into visible acting, modeling or idol work, she did not begin a stream of public releases or credited performances. This absence later became an explicit subject of her farewell message: she apologized to supporters for not being able to show them her energetic self during the three years following graduation.
The period was not described by Maaya or Amuse as inactivity without purpose. The 2022 announcement said that she had continued lessons in order to fulfill her dream of becoming a musician. She was therefore in development and study, although the agency did not release a detailed lesson schedule, recordings or a debut plan.
Maaya retained connections with Sakura Gakuin. A 2019 Sakura Gakuin birthday message noted that she often came to performances and gave younger members singing advice. That should be understood as alumni support, not as a formal coaching or staff appointment.
In 2021 she was among the graduates connected with Sakura Gakuin’s tenth-anniversary publication “Thank you…,” one of the principal retrospective projects produced during the group’s final phase. Sakura Gakuin ended its own activities on August 31, 2021, transforming Maaya’s status from graduate of an operating group to alumna of a completed institution.
2022: HIGH-SCHOOL GRADUATION, MUSIC UNIVERSITY AND DEPARTURE FROM AMUSE
On March 31, 2022, Amuse announced that Maaya had left the agency. The date concluded approximately ten years of representation, from her second grade of elementary school through the end of high school.
Maaya’s personal message contained several points that must be read together:
She had graduated from high school in March 2022.
She had spent the three years after Sakura Gakuin taking lessons toward becoming a musician.
She would enter a music university in April 2022.
She wanted to gain more knowledge and technique, practice seriously and discover the music she herself wished to create.
She hoped gradually to begin music activity and use social media.
She explicitly said that she was not giving up music.
The announcement was therefore a change of institution and method, not a retirement notice. At the same time, it did not constitute a professional music debut. The careful current description is that Maaya entered music university and continued to pursue music privately after leaving Amuse.
The university’s name, program and her enrollment records were not publicly disclosed. Four standard academic years would have elapsed by spring 2026, but no reliable public statement confirms whether she graduated, changed programs, remained enrolled or received a particular degree. Her education should not be completed by inference.
2023: PUBLICLY SHARED OUTING WITH SAKI OOGA
The clearest verified post-Amuse sighting occurred in September 2023. Saki Ooga, Maaya’s former Sakura Gakuin senior and original sleepiece partner, posted that she had attended Fudanjuku’s fifteenth-anniversary concert with Maaya. Saki recalled that Fudanjuku had been popular among the Sakura Gakuin members during the 2015 school year and noted that Maaya knew many of the songs.
The post was meaningful for alumni history. Saki had been the first Education Chairperson, while Maaya later became the second; Saki had also welcomed Maaya into sleepiece in 2015. Their concert outing demonstrated that the relationship continued beyond the group and agency system.
It was, however, a personal outing shared through Saki’s official account, not a billed Maaya performance, formal reunion or career relaunch. That boundary is essential when documenting a former entertainer who has chosen limited public exposure.
CURRENT STATUS — AUGUST 30, 2026
Maaya is twenty-two years old. Her last direct official career statement remains the March 2022 Amuse farewell message, in which she announced her music-university enrollment and continuing commitment to music. Her most recent clearly verified public image or appearance located for this profile is Saki Ooga’s September 2023 Fudanjuku concert post.
No reliable public evidence available by the reference date confirms:
a new talent agency;
an official individual website or social account;
a commercial solo single, album or credited guest recording;
a public concert debut after leaving Amuse;
the identity of her university;
graduation from that university;
or formal retirement from music and entertainment.
The correct editorial conclusion is limited but positive: Maaya publicly chose further musical study and left open the possibility of future activity. Until she or an authenticated representative supplies a newer update, her private life and educational outcome should remain private and unfilled by rumor.
